Kabir Sen (also known as “MC Kabir”) is both a professional hip hop artist and a music teacher based in the Boston area. Originally from London, he is a singer, emcee and producer whose music brews a heavy blend of thoughtful lyrics, soulful harmonies and funky rhythms from around the world. Fusing his creative interests in hip hop, songwriting and education has long been a passion for Kabir, and his background in music education has enabled him to bring his inclusive message to schools, colleges and clubs all over the U.S. and beyond.

Kabir grew up on all kinds of music from Ravi Shankar to Thelonious Monk (and everything in between). He loved funk, soul and jazz in high school and while in his college band, “Uncle Trouble,” he began writing songs that were influenced by the music of the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, and Sly Stone.

As he went deeper into the world of singing, emceeing, recording and performing, he became interested in writing message-oriented rhymes (which led to a career bringing his original hip hop education programs into schools). Kabir has shared stages with many acts who have influenced him over the years, including: KRS-1, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Lyrics Born, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, Blackalicious, Edo. G, Wyclef Jean, G Love, Aesop Rock, Czarface (7L & Esoteric with Inspectah Deck from the Wu-Tang Clan), Run the Jewels, and many more.

In addition to numerous recording projects and features on other artists’ albums, Kabir has seven solo albums of his own: “Cultural Confusion” (2001), “Fuel for the Fire” (2003), “Peaceful Solutions” (2006), "The Time is Now" (2009), “Olympic Gold” (2012), “No More Excuses” (2015), “The Good Life (If You Only Knew)” (2020). His eighth studio album will be released in 2021.

Kabir has received positive reviews and features in The New Yorker, Billboard, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The International Herald Tribune, SPIN, VIBE, URB, and countless other publications. He was highlighted on National Public Radio, including a 10-minute feature on PRI’s “The World”. He wrote, arranged and produced a multi-genre children’s music album for IBM, as well as several educational hip hop songs for a number of subjects and school curriculums. Kabir was a writer, producer and consultant for “Rhythm Rhyme Results” (winner of two Parent Choice Awards). He was a guest host for a Top-10 video countdown on MTV, he appeared on an episode of the PBS children’s cartoon “Fetch”, and he was commissioned to write and record a song for PBS about "Masterpiece Theater" (in honor of the show’s 50 year anniversary). A few years ago, Kabir was invited to showcase his work and musical journey in “Homespun” – an Indian American Heritage exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. He recently wrote an article in GQ magazine about his relationship with his father (Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen).

Kabir performs with the Krush Faktory at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA on the first Saturday of every month. This monthly residency has been running for a decade and features many talented Boston musicians, some of whom are part of a bigger collective called "Dub Down" (performing every Thursday night at Bull McCabes in Somerville). He also has a Beatles night on the third Saturday of every month in which he blends his original material with Beatles classics…the night has come to be known as “KaBeatles!” and features Marc Friedman on bass (The Slip, Ryan Montbleau Band) and Peter MacLean (drummer for Maceo Parker).

As a music teacher for 20 years at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Kabir has developed numerous curriculums for a variety of ages and student populations. He teaches hip hop classes for “BASEC” in the Belmont Public Schools and is gradually working on two books: One about hip hop in the classroom and another based on a children’s musical titled “True Courage: A Whaling Adventure.” Kabir’s wide range of professional experiences as a writer, performer, music teacher and recording artist have enabled his work to take on a variety of different shapes: interactive musical performances (either solo or with a live band), recording projects for any number of purposes, and hip hop education workshops and lectures at schools, where students of all ages learn about the history of the art form and explore hip hop as an expression of cultural identity.
